Confirm the exact BES500 and included parts
Check the model label on the base while the machine is unplugged. The current U.S./Canada BES500 instruction manual rates the North American machine at 120 V, 60 Hz and 1560 W. A similar-looking Sage or Breville machine from another region should not be connected through a simple plug adapter.
Before discarding the carton, identify the machine’s removable parts and supplied accessories. The current manual lists:
- 64 fl oz (1.9 L) removable water tank and lid;
- removable drip tray and drip-tray grid;
- 54 mm stainless-steel portafilter;
- 1 CUP and 2 CUP single-wall filter baskets;
- 1 CUP and 2 CUP dual-wall filter baskets;
- stainless-steel milk jug, 54 mm tamper and Razor dose-trimming tool;
- steam-tip cleaning tool, located beneath the water tank;

The manual notes that the 2 CUP single-wall basket comes installed in the portafilter. Look there before reporting it missing. Included items can change by package, retailer or region, so compare the box with its own contents list before buying a duplicate. Do not add a water-filter step from another Breville model
The current U.S./Canada BES500 manual does not list a tank water-filter holder or cartridge among the included accessories or first-use steps. Do not force a Barista Express filter, copy a setup video for another model or assume an empty tank socket is missing.
If your exact regional package includes a filter and its own official manual instructs you to install it, follow that regional documentation. Model suffix, voltage, package contents and water-treatment instructions take priority over generic Bambino Plus advice.
Choose a safe counter and outlet
Set the machine on a stable, level, dry surface that tolerates heat and occasional water. Leave enough room to lift the rear tank vertically, remove the drip tray and raise the steam wand without hitting a cabinet. Keep the machine away from the counter edge, sinks, hot plates, ovens and gas burners.
Keep the cord away from hot surfaces and where nobody can pull or trip over it. Use a correctly grounded outlet. If an extension cord is unavoidable, the manual requires an electrical rating at least as great as the appliance, safe routing and a three-prong grounding plug. Do not use a travel adapter to operate a machine made for another voltage.
Wash the correct parts before first use
Remove labels and packaging from the machine, then check every cavity and cardboard insert for loose accessories. Breville directs the owner to wash these items with warm water and a gentle dishwashing liquid:
- drip tray;
- drip-tray grid;
- portafilter;
- all filter baskets you expect to use;
- stainless-steel milk jug.
Rinse them well and dry them thoroughly. Never immerse the espresso machine, cord or plug in water. Do not use a cleaning tablet or descaling powder simply because both were included in the box; store them for the maintenance cycle that actually calls for them.
Fill and seat the water tank correctly
- Lift the tank from the rear of the unplugged machine.
- Remove its lid and fill it with potable water to the indicated MAX line. Do not overfill.
- Replace the lid and lower the tank squarely onto the machine.
- Press it into its final position so it sits flush against the rear housing.
Use cold potable tap water unless the exact regional manual says otherwise. Breville does not recommend highly filtered, demineralized or distilled water for this BES500 because it may affect taste and how the machine is designed to function. Never put milk, coffee, vinegar, flavored water or undiluted maintenance product in the tank.
The machine detects a low water level. When enough water is present and the tank is attached correctly, the 1 CUP, 2 CUP and STEAM buttons can illuminate. A dark group of those three buttons may therefore indicate an empty or incorrectly seated tank, not necessarily a failed machine.
Run the Bambino Plus first-use cycle
- Install the drip tray. Confirm that the tray and grid are seated correctly at the front of the machine.
- Prepare the collection container. Use one that holds at least 17 fl oz (500 ml). Position it to catch the water drips from the portafilter/group-head area and steam wand. Keep the portafilter empty—no coffee, tablet or cleaning disc.
- Connect the machine. With dry hands and a dry counter, plug the cord into the suitable grounded outlet.
- Wake the controls. Press 1 CUP, 2 CUP or STEAM once to turn the machine on.
- Start the initial cycle. Press 1 CUP. Let the machine complete the sequence without changing settings or removing the collection container.
- Wait for ready mode. The cycle is complete when the machine enters ready mode and all lights are illuminated.
The manual states that this cycle rinses the machine and primes the heating system. The advertised three-second ThermoJet heat-up does not replace this one-time preparation. Do not skip the prime and begin extracting coffee from a newly unpacked machine.
What is normal during the initial rinse?
- The pump and internal valves make operating sounds.
- Clear water or drips enter the collection container from the brewing and wand area.
- Buttons change state while the automatic sequence runs.
- The machine finishes in ready mode with all lights illuminated.
- Some clear water may remain in the drip tray after priming and later automatic purges.
Normal pump noise is not permission to let the machine run dry. Keep the tank above its detectable level and make sure the collection container cannot overflow. If water appears beneath the housing, near the cord or from another unintended location, stop and unplug the machine if safe.

If the panel is completely dark after tank and outlet checks, use the Bambino Plus no-power diagnosis. If it powers up but cannot draw or deliver water, follow the BES500 priming and water-flow guide. Do not remove the housing or inject water into internal tubing.
If an unusual pattern continues, identify it through the Bambino Plus light decoder rather than trying unrelated button combinations.
After the machine reaches ready mode
- Switch the machine off by pressing 1 CUP and STEAM together if you need to reposition it.
- Unplug it before moving or reassembling parts.
- Empty the collection container and drip tray carefully; the water may be hot.
- Rinse and dry the portafilter and basket before adding coffee.
- Refill the tank if the initial cycle brought it close to the low-level threshold.

Do not treat those ranges as a guarantee that any grind will extract correctly. The grinder, coffee, basket, dose and yield must be adjusted together after the machine is operational.
Keep the first-use, cleaning and descale cycles separate

Prepare the automatic steam system only after priming
Do not test automatic milk texturing before the water-only first-use cycle finishes. For the first milk drink, keep the drip-tray temperature sensor clean and dry, place the supplied jug flat on it, fill between the jug’s MIN and MAX markings and lower the wand fully. Purge the wand briefly before milk texturing.

Common Bambino Plus setup mistakes
- Following a BES450, Barista Express or overseas manual because the controls look similar.
- Discarding the carton before finding the basket installed inside the portafilter or the cleaning tool beneath the tank.
- Trying to install a water filter not listed for the current U.S./Canada BES500 package.
- Using distilled, demineralized, flavored or non-potable water.
- Starting with a small cup rather than a 500 ml or larger collection container.
