- Turn the machine off so that all lights are off.
- Press and hold 2 CUP and STEAM simultaneously for 5 seconds.
- Confirm that cleaning mode has opened, then press 1 CUP or 2 CUP to start the cycle.

Do not substitute 1 CUP + STEAM: from the off state, that combination belongs to descaling. Likewise, pressing 1 CUP + 2 CUP for only 2 seconds can enter shot-volume programming rather than the 5-second cleaning mode. Confirm the light behavior before pressing another button.

Follow the controls rather than trying to time the process: 1 CUP and 2 CUP flash alternately while the cycle is in progress, and the machine returns to ready mode when it is complete.
If the cleaning cycle will not start
- Check the model label. Confirm BES500 or BES500BSS. The Bambino BES450 and other Breville machines can use different maintenance combinations.
- Fill and reseat the tank. Fill it to MAX and push it down completely. The 1 CUP, 2 CUP and STEAM buttons illuminate when sufficient water is detected and the tank is correctly attached.

If the cycle starts but does not finish
As long as 1 CUP and 2 CUP continue to flash alternately, leave the portafilter locked and allow the automatic sequence to continue until the machine returns to ready mode.
If the controls become unresponsive, the machine loses all illumination or the pump makes an unusually loud dry sound without moving water, stop.
