Breville Barista Express Not Heating Up: What to Check

If your Breville Barista Express turns on but is not heating up, first return the STEAM/HOT WATER dial to STANDBY and wait for the POWER light to stop flashing. Run this safe no-heat test without coffee

Testing the three heated functions separately is more useful than judging one lukewarm espresso. Remove the portafilter and keep your hands clear of every outlet.

  1. Fill and reseat the water tank. Press it fully into place and turn the STEAM/HOT WATER dial to center STANDBY.
  2. Press POWER and watch the panel. During normal heat-up, POWER flashes. Continue only after it becomes steady and all control-panel button lights illuminate.
  3. Test the group head. With the portafilter removed and a cup in place, press 1 CUP once and observe whether the delivered water is clearly warm or hot. Keep your hands away from the flow.
  4. Test the hot-water outlet briefly. Place a heat-safe cup underneath, select HOT WATER and observe from a safe distance. Return the dial to STANDBY after the test.
  5. Test steam separately. Aim the wand into the drip tray, select STEAM and wait while its indicator flashes. The steam function is ready when that light stops flashing. Return the dial to STANDBY when finished.
  6. Compare all three results. Note whether group-head water, hot water and steam are hot, merely weak, or completely absent.

Do not diagnose the machine from one arbitrary thermometer number at the cup. Water loses heat as it travels through the outlet and into a cool vessel, so a cup reading is not the same as the controlled temperature inside the brewing system. The important first distinction is whether the machine creates obvious heat at any outlet.

The steam dial can prevent normal heating

The simplest documented cause is easy to miss: if the STEAM/HOT WATER dial is not in STANDBY when the machine is turned on, its indicator flashes and the Barista Express does not start the normal heating cycle. Return the dial to center. The regular heat-up sequence should begin, with POWER flashing until the machine reaches operating temperature.

If the dial was already centered, move it deliberately to STANDBY and make sure it is not resting between positions. A correctly centered dial that still produces the same warning could indicate a switch or control fault; repeated turning will not repair it.

What a flashing POWER light means

A flashing POWER light normally means the thermocoil is heating, not that the heater has failed. It also flashes while the machine reheats after waking from SLEEP. The BES870 enters SLEEP after 1 hour of inactivity and AUTO OFF after 3 hours, so a fresh startup can be completely normal.

  • POWER eventually becomes steady: the controller believes operating temperature has been reached. Continue with the outlet tests.
  • POWER never reaches the ready state: switch off, unplug and let the machine cool. If the behavior repeats from a cold start with a full, seated tank and centered dial, arrange service.
  • The entire panel is dark: use the Barista Express won’t-turn-on diagnosis instead; a heating article cannot solve loss of incoming power.

Do not keep pressing random combinations while POWER flashes. Some combinations enter cleaning, descaling or temperature modes and can make the display more confusing without testing the heater.

Lukewarm coffee is not always a failed heater

If the hot-water outlet and steam are clearly hot, the thermocoil is producing heat. A drink can still seem cool because cold ceramic, a cold portafilter and milk absorb heat quickly. Start with the operating conditions before treating it as an internal failure.

  • Warm the cup with the hot-water outlet or on the cup-warming tray.
  • Run hot water through the portafilter and basket, then dry them thoroughly before adding ground coffee.
  • For a milk drink, heat the milk rather than relying on the espresso to warm a large volume of cold milk. Breville’s operating range for milk texturing is 140–149°F (60–65°C).
  • Allow the machine to return to its ready state after steaming. Water discharged into the drip tray during automatic purging is normal as the thermocoil returns to espresso temperature.

The BES870 also offers an Advanced Temperature Mode with a limited adjustment range of 4°F above or below the default, in 2°F steps. That adjustment can fine-tune a working machine; it cannot make completely cold water hot.

Scale can reduce performance, but do not descale blindly

Descaling is not a universal cure for sudden total loss of heat. Do not pour extra acid into the tank, repeat cycles back-to-back or confuse a cleaning-tablet backflush with descaling. If every outlet remains cold while the panel reports ready, chemicals cannot repair a heater, temperature sensor, thermal protection device or control circuit.

There is no button reset that repairs no heat

The current BES870 manual does not document a heating-system reset or a factory reset that repairs failed hardware. Its button combinations have specific, unrelated purposes:

  • Holding PROGRAM until three beeps restores programmed shot volumes and the default espresso-water temperature.
  • Holding 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER starts the cleaning cycle.
  • Holding 2 CUP and POWER enters descale mode.
  • Holding PROGRAM while pressing POWER enters Advanced Temperature Mode.

A settings reset may undo an incorrect temperature adjustment, but the allowed adjustment is small. No button sequence can reconnect an open heater, replace a thermal fuse, repair a sensor or restore a failed control component.

What to do if the machine stopped while in use

Breville documents a safety thermal cutout that may activate if the pump or grinder overheats. If the machine stopped during use, press POWER to switch it off if it still responds, unplug it and leave it undisturbed for 30–60 minutes. Then reconnect it to a confirmed working outlet and test it once.

If it recovers, do not immediately repeat the long grinding or pumping operation that preceded the shutdown. If it will not heat after cooling, or shuts down again during ordinary use, stop using it.
