If your Breville Barista Express won’t turn on and shows no lights or sounds, first rule out normal AUTO OFF, then test the outlet and inspect the cord before trying the machine once on a confirmed working outlet. If it remains completely dark, or trips the outlet or breaker again, stop testing. The remaining possibilities are internal electrical faults that require Breville or a qualified appliance technician.
This guide covers the original Barista Express BES870 series, including the BES870XL sold in North America. It does not cover the Barista Express Impress BES876 or touchscreen models. The model-specific behavior below follows the current official U.S. BES870 instruction manual.
Electrical safety: Do not touch the plug or outlet with wet hands. If there is water near the cord, outlet or machine housing, unplug only if it is safe to do so and do not power the machine again. Stop immediately for a damaged cord, hot or discolored plug, burning smell, smoke, sparking, or a breaker or GFCI that trips again.
First confirm what “won’t turn on” means
| What you see | What it most likely means | Correct first step |
|---|---|---|
| No lights, sound, pump or grinder response | AUTO OFF, outlet, cord, power switch or internal electrical fault | Follow the no-power checks below |
| Panel is dark after more than 3 hours unused | Normal AUTO OFF may have occurred | Press POWER once |
| POWER light flashes | The machine has power and is normally heating | Wait for the ready state |
| STEAM/HOT WATER light flashes at switch-on and the machine does not heat | The dial is outside STANDBY | Return the dial to the center position |
| Panel lights are on but no water comes out | This is a water-delivery fault, not total power loss | Test the group head and hot-water outlet separately |
| Machine switches off during use | The documented safety thermal cutout may have activated | Switch off, unplug and cool for 30–60 minutes |
| GFCI or circuit breaker trips | An electrical fault or overloaded circuit is possible | Stop using the machine if it trips again |
If any panel light is visible, the machine is not completely without power. Match the exact flashing or solid pattern in the Barista Express lights guide before treating it as a failed power switch.
Run this no-power check in order
1. Rule out SLEEP and AUTO OFF
The BES870 enters SLEEP mode after 1 hour without activity; during sleep, the POWER light flashes slowly. Press any button except POWER to wake it, then wait while it reheats.
After 3 hours, the machine enters AUTO OFF and the panel goes dark. Press POWER once to restart it. A machine that wakes normally was not suffering a power failure.
2. Return the steam dial to STANDBY
Place the STEAM/HOT WATER dial in its center STANDBY position. If that dial was left on STEAM or HOT WATER, the machine may power up but refuse to begin its normal heating sequence. In that case the STEAM/HOT WATER light flashes, so this is not a true no-light condition.
3. Inspect the cord and plug while unplugged
Remove the plug by holding its body, not by pulling the cord. Inspect the full accessible cord and plug for cuts, crushed sections, bent or loose prongs, melted plastic, dark marks or unusual heat. Do not reconnect a damaged cord or plug.
Also check for recent water around the rear tank area, beneath the machine or near the outlet. Water reaching electrical areas is not a reason to “let it dry and try again.” Keep it unplugged and use the Barista Express leak diagnosis only to identify the visible source; suspected internal moisture requires service.
4. Prove that the outlet works
- Leave the espresso machine unplugged.
- Test the same outlet with another known-working appliance.
- If the outlet is dead, check for a tripped GFCI receptacle in the kitchen and inspect the electrical panel for a tripped breaker.
- Reset the GFCI or breaker only once and only if there is no water, damage, burning smell or other sign of an electrical fault.
A GFCI can protect more than the outlet on which its RESET button appears, so check nearby kitchen receptacles as well. If the outlet dies again, or the machine trips a confirmed working circuit, do not keep resetting it.
5. Try one controlled restart
Plug the Barista Express directly into a confirmed working, properly grounded 110/120V outlet. For this diagnosis, remove a power strip, smart plug, timer or extension cord from the circuit. Make sure the steam dial is in STANDBY, then press POWER once.
- POWER flashes and the panel later illuminates: normal heating has resumed.
- Lights appear but a function still does not work: the fault belongs to that function, not the incoming power supply.
- The panel remains completely dark: stop after this test. Repeated button pressing cannot repair an open electrical circuit.
- The GFCI or breaker trips: unplug the machine and arrange service; do not try another circuit to defeat the protection.
Why the Breville Barista Express won’t turn on after stopping
A machine that was running and then stopped has a different diagnostic path from one that was cold and dead at the start of the day. Breville states that its safety thermal cutout may activate if the pump or grinder overheats.
- Press POWER to switch the machine off if the button still responds.
- Unplug it from the outlet.
- Allow it to cool undisturbed for 30–60 minutes.
- Reconnect it to the confirmed working outlet and test once.
If it recovers, avoid immediately repeating the heavy grinding or pumping that preceded the shutdown. A second shutdown during ordinary home use needs professional diagnosis. If the machine never powers back on, do not assume that an internal thermal fuse is an owner-resettable part—the manual ends the owner procedure at cooling and contacting support.
What does not cause a completely dark panel
An unlocked bean hopper
The hopper should be installed and locked for grinder operation, but the BES870 manual assigns a specific response to an incorrectly attached hopper: the FILTER SIZE LEDs flash. It does not describe the entire control panel going dark. Do not bypass the hopper interlock while chasing an unrelated power fault.
An empty or poorly seated water tank
Fill and firmly reseat the tank before brewing, but on this model an empty or incorrectly seated tank explains no water, no hot water, pump noise or interrupted delivery—not a totally lifeless panel. If the controls illuminate but water does not move, follow the two-outlet water-flow test.
Scale, grind or a blocked basket
These can restrict water or espresso flow, but they do not explain why no control light appears. A machine with no electrical response cannot run a cleaning or descale cycle, so do not add chemicals to the tank as a no-power fix.
Do not use button combinations as a power reset
The current U.S. BES870 manual does not document a hidden reset that restores power to a dead machine. Several button combinations have other purposes:
- Holding PROGRAM until three beeps restores programmed shot volumes and the default espresso-water temperature.
- Holding 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER starts the cleaning cycle.
- Holding 2 CUP and POWER enters descale mode.
- Holding PROGRAM while pressing POWER enters advanced temperature mode.
None of these can restore electricity to an unresponsive panel. Random combinations can instead start a maintenance or settings mode when the machine powers up again.
When the external checks point to an internal fault
If the outlet is proven, the cord and plug show no external damage, the machine has cooled, and pressing POWER produces no light or sound, the owner-safe diagnosis is complete. Possible internal causes include the power-button assembly, internal wiring or connections, a protective fuse or cutoff, or the control board. The same dark-panel symptom cannot identify which one failed from outside.
Do not remove the housing to probe live voltage, bridge a fuse or bypass a safety device. The BES870 manual directs maintenance beyond its documented cleaning procedures to Breville Consumer Support. Have the model number, serial number, purchase date and a short description of what happened immediately before the failure ready.
Repair, warranty or replacement?
| Situation | Best next move |
|---|---|
| Machine is new or under warranty | Stop after the external checks and contact Breville before authorizing any repair |
| Known-working outlet, no lights, no recent overload | Request a professional electrical diagnosis |
| Machine recovers after cooling but shuts down again | Stop using it and arrange service |
| Breaker or GFCI trips again | Keep the machine unplugged; do not repeat the test |
| Older machine with several existing faults | Compare the written repair estimate with replacement cost and remaining condition |
For an older BES870, use the repair-or-replace decision guide before paying for a control board or extensive electrical labor. Machine age, repeat faults, leak history, grinder condition and the warranty on the repair matter more than the failed part alone.
Barista Express power FAQs
Why does my Breville Barista Express have no power or lights?
After ruling out three-hour AUTO OFF, prove the outlet with another appliance, inspect the unplugged cord and plug, and try the machine once on the confirmed outlet. A panel that remains completely dark points beyond normal settings and owner maintenance to the switch, wiring, protection device or control electronics.
Does the Barista Express have a reset button?
The current U.S. BES870 manual does not document an owner-accessible power reset button. Its PROGRAM reset restores shot-volume and temperature settings only; it does not repair a machine with no electrical response.
Can an empty water tank stop the machine from turning on?
An empty or poorly seated tank can prevent water delivery, but it does not normally make every panel light disappear on the BES870. Fill and reseat it, then diagnose a lit machine by its water-flow symptom.
Can the bean hopper prevent the machine from powering on?
An incorrectly locked hopper prevents normal grinder use, but the documented warning is flashing FILTER SIZE LEDs. A totally dark panel requires the power-path checks instead.
Why did the machine turn off while grinding or pumping?
The safety thermal cutout may have activated because the pump or grinder overheated. Switch off, unplug and cool the machine for 30–60 minutes. If it does not recover or shuts down again, contact support.
Should I replace an internal thermal fuse myself?
No internal fuse replacement is an owner procedure in the BES870 manual. A technician must distinguish a protective fuse from a switch, wiring, thermocoil or control-board fault and determine why the protection opened before replacing anything.
The safest reliable sequence is short: distinguish a dark panel from a flashing-light state, rule out AUTO OFF, inspect the unplugged cord, prove the outlet and try one controlled restart. If the Breville Barista Express still won’t turn on, keep it unplugged and move to warranty or professional service rather than opening the machine.
