What already comes with the Bambino Plus?
The current U.S. BES500 documentation lists a 54 mm stainless steel portafilter and the following included accessories:
- 54 mm tamper;
- the Razor precision dosing tool;
- 16 fl oz / 480 ml stainless steel milk jug;
- 1 CUP and 2 CUP single-wall filter baskets;

That means a new milk jug, ordinary basket, basic tamper or cleaning disc may simply duplicate something you own. An upgrade should solve a specific limitation rather than make the accessory collection larger.
Bambino Plus 54 mm compatibility rules
Confirm BES500 or BES500BSS first
The model number is more reliable than the product name alone. The Bambino Plus is the BES500 family. The original Bambino is the BES450 family, and other Breville machines can use different baskets, portafilters, controls or included tools even when a retailer groups them together.
Breville products are sold under the Sage name in some markets. A Sage listing can be relevant when it names the equivalent BES500 model and the mechanical dimensions match, but voltage-specific machine parts and regional package contents should not be assumed to be interchangeable.

1. An espresso grinder is the most important upgrade
The Bambino Plus has no built-in grinder. When using the supplied single-wall baskets, grind size creates most of the resistance that controls shot flow. - Look for fine, repeatable adjustment in the espresso range.

2. A compact 0.1 g scale improves every shot
A scale is useful before and during extraction. It confirms the dry coffee dose, measures the beverage yield and shows whether a saved button is producing the same result from one shot to the next. Choose 0.1 g readability; a kitchen scale that changes only in whole grams is too coarse for small espresso adjustments.
Size matters on the compact Bambino Plus. The scale must sit flat on the drip tray while leaving room for the cup and enough vertical clearance below the portafilter. 3. A 53.3 mm self-leveling tamper is a useful upgrade
The supplied tamper can make good espresso. Replace it only if its fit or feel makes it difficult to produce a level puck. A 53.3 mm base covers the Breville basket more closely, while a self-leveling collar helps the base enter squarely. A spring can make the end point more repeatable, but it cannot repair poor distribution or compensate for the wrong grind.

Tamp once, level and consistently. Repeated polishing, extreme pressure or a premium metal base does not automatically improve extraction. If the shot is too fast or too slow after the dose and preparation are repeatable, adjust the grinder rather than trying to control flow through tamp force.
4. A dosing funnel and WDT tool can simplify puck preparation
Choose a funnel that sits on the outer rim
A dosing funnel keeps loose grounds inside the basket while grinding, transferring coffee or using a WDT tool. An outer-rim design leaves the inside edge of the basket accessible, so it is less likely to create an untouched ring in the coffee bed. Magnets are convenient but not essential; stable seating matters more.
Confirm that the listing names Breville/Sage 54 mm baskets and the Bambino Plus. Some funnels are designed to press a grinder switch on Barista models with built-in grinders. That trigger has no function on the Bambino Plus, so do not pay extra for it unless the same funnel otherwise suits your workflow.
Use WDT to break up clumps, not to compact the puck

A bottomless portafilter removes the spouted floor beneath the basket, allowing you to see the underside during extraction. - Useful when: you already have a capable grinder and want visual feedback on distribution and tamping.

- Expect: messy spraying while learning; use a wide cup and keep the area clear.

The original spouted portafilter remains better for clean, forgiving daily use and for splitting a shot. Keep it even if you add a bottomless version. 6. Precision baskets change the recipe
A precision basket can provide a more consistent hole pattern and may support a different dose or flow profile. It does not simply make the existing settings better. Changing from the supplied basket usually requires a new grind setting, dose and yield test.
Check three specifications before buying:
- Fit: it must seat correctly in a Breville 54 mm portafilter.
- Capacity: choose a basket designed around the dose you actually use.
- Depth: confirm that it fits the intended spouted or bottomless portafilter without contacting the body underneath.

7. Puck screens are optional, not essential

- Choose a screen sold for the Breville 54 mm basket family.
- Prefer a thin screen when headspace is limited.

A small tamping mat protects the counter and gives the portafilter a stable surface. A knock box keeps wet pucks out of the sink and reduces impacts against a trash can. Neither changes extraction, so choose them for workspace size, stability and ease of cleaning rather than model-specific marketing.
Cleaning and descaling products to keep on hand
The Bambino Plus uses two separate maintenance procedures. The cleaning cycle uses a cleaning tablet with the cleaning disc to remove coffee residue from the brewing path. Descaling uses a descaling solution to address mineral buildup. One procedure does not replace the other.
Buy consumables only when needed and follow the exact BES500 sequence.
