If the DESCALE light is on your Ninja Luxe Café Premier ES601, the machine is asking for a specific descaling cycle—not the shorter CLEAN cycle. The ES601 descale process takes about 90 minutes and flushes descaling solution through both the portafilter and steam system to remove mineral buildup from the internal water path.
You can use either Ninja descaling powder mixed with 37 fl oz of water or, as an official alternative for the U.S. ES601, 16 oz of plain white vinegar topped up with water to the reservoir’s Descale line. Descale and CLEAN are not the same thing
The ES601 has separate DESCALE and CLEAN procedures because they remove different types of buildup.

What should you use to descale the Ninja Luxe Café?
For the U.S. ES601, Ninja documents two descaling options: its own descaling powder or plain white vinegar.
Option 1: Ninja descaling powder
Dissolve one Ninja descale packet in a separate container with 37 fl oz of water. Mix it before pouring the solution into the water reservoir.
The official U.S. Ninja Luxe Café descaling powder is model XSKDSCLSOL4PK. Ninja lists it as compatible with the ES601, as well as several other Luxe Café models.
Option 2: white vinegar
The ES601 manual also allows 16 oz of plain white vinegar. Pour the vinegar into the empty reservoir first, then add water until the liquid reaches the reservoir’s Descale line.
Use plain white vinegar. Do not assume white wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, malt vinegar or another kitchen vinegar is equivalent simply because it contains acid.
Vinegar is inexpensive and officially documented for this model, but its smell and taste can take more rinsing to remove. The Ninja powder is the simpler choice if you want to follow the manufacturer-branded method.
Before starting the descale cycle
Do the preparation first. Once the approximately 90-minute cycle is running, the machine needs somewhere to send a considerable amount of water through both its brew and steam paths.
- Empty the main drip tray completely.
- Remove the reservoir water filter if you have one installed.
- Prepare the descale solution using one of the two methods above.
- Install the double basket in the portafilter.
- Lock the portafilter into the group head.
- Place the milk jug on its platform with the steam wand inside.
- Place an empty container holding at least 18 oz under the portafilter.
You may need to remove the center drip tray to fit a sufficiently large container beneath the portafilter.
Do not skip emptying the main drip tray. Part of the descale-cycle water is intentionally discharged into it, so starting with a partially full tray can cause an overflow.
How to descale the Ninja Luxe Café ES601 step by step
- Empty the main drip tray. Remove any existing water so the tray has room for water discharged during the cycle.
- Remove the reservoir water filter if fitted. Do not run descaling solution through the filter.
- Add the descaling solution. Either mix one Ninja descale packet with 37 fl oz of water in a separate container and pour it into the reservoir, or add 16 oz of white vinegar and then water to the Descale line.
- Install the double basket. Put the double basket into the portafilter.
- Lock in the portafilter. Fasten it normally into the group head.

What happens during the 90-minute cycle?
The Ninja Luxe Café does not continuously pour water from one outlet for 90 minutes. The purpose of the programmed cycle is to move descaling solution through the internal paths that need it, including the brew system and steam system.
You should therefore expect water or solution to appear in several places:
- Through the portafilter into the container underneath it.
- Through the steam wand into the milk jug.
- Inside the main drip tray.
Pauses and changes in water delivery during an automated maintenance cycle do not by themselves mean that the machine is stuck. The useful indicator is the countdown on the control panel.
If the machine is still counting down normally, allow the programmed cycle to continue.
Do not forget the rinse steps after descaling
The job is not finished when the 90-minute countdown reaches the end. You still need to remove the descaling solution from the removable components and flush fresh water through the machine.
- Wait for the ES601 to beep at the end of the descale cycle.
- Carefully remove the portafilter, main drip tray and milk jug. They may all contain hot water.
- Empty them.
- Hand-wash the affected removable parts with warm, soapy water to remove descaling residue.
- Empty and rinse the water reservoir.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh water up to the Max Fill line.
- Reinstall the main drip tray.
- Install the portafilter in the group head.
- Do not reinstall the milk jug yet.
- Run a 12 oz CLASSIC brew to flush the group head.
- With the milk jug still removed, press PURGE to flush fresh water through the steam wand.
These final flushes matter, particularly when you used vinegar. Do not brew coffee immediately if the machine or discharged water still smells strongly of vinegar or descaling solution.
What if the coffee still tastes like vinegar?
A lingering vinegar smell or taste means the machine needs more fresh-water flushing, not another dose of descaler.
- Rinse the reservoir thoroughly and refill it with fresh water.
- Run another water-only CLASSIC brew.
- Run another steam-wand PURGE.
- Repeat with fresh water until the vinegar odor is gone.
Do not try to mask vinegar residue by immediately brewing coffee or steaming milk. Flush the machine until the water itself smells neutral.
How often should you descale the Ninja Luxe Café?
For the ES601, the best trigger is the machine itself: run the descale cycle when the DESCALE light illuminates.
There is no single calendar interval that is perfect for every owner because mineral buildup depends heavily on the water entering the machine. Hard water can create scale much faster than softer water.
Ninja’s U.S. descaling-powder listing suggests using the product approximately every three to four months, but the ES601 is also designed to account for your water hardness and request descaling accordingly. If your DESCALE light comes on, do not postpone the cycle simply because fewer than three or four months have passed.
Set the correct water hardness on the ES601
The Ninja Luxe Café uses the water-hardness setting to help determine maintenance timing, so an incorrect setting can make its descale reminders less representative of the water you actually use.
On the U.S. ES600/ES601 menu, Hard Water is setting _h08.
- Use the included water-hardness test strip with the water you normally put in the reservoir.
- Count the number of purple boxes on the strip.
- Press and hold the SIZE button for about 3 seconds to enter Additional Settings.
- Turn the center dial to _h08 Hard Water.
- Select the matching hardness level from hd 0 through hd 5.
- Confirm the selection and exit the settings menu.
Do not confuse this with _h07, which controls froth temperature on the ES601.
Why the DESCALE light comes on
The light is a maintenance reminder that the internal water system is due for mineral-scale removal. It does not mean the machine has detected one specific clogged pipe or confirmed an internal failure.

Why does the descale cycle need the milk jug?
The jug is not there because you are cleaning milk residue with descaler. It provides the receiving container for solution flushed through the steam wand during the programmed descale process.
That is why Ninja instructs you to place the milk jug on its platform with the steam wand inside before starting the cycle.
After descaling has finished and the removable components have been washed, the final steam-wand rinse is different: Ninja tells you to leave the milk jug uninstalled and press PURGE.
Why does the drip tray fill during descaling?
Some water from the ES601 descale cycle is intentionally deposited in the main drip tray. That is normal.
This is also why the first official preparation step is to empty the tray completely. If you start the cycle with an already full or nearly full drip tray, it may overflow onto the counter even though the machine itself is operating normally.
Can descaling fix slow water flow?
It can if mineral buildup is restricting the water path. Scale does not usually create every flow problem instantly, though, so the history of the symptom matters.
A gradual decline in water flow combined with an overdue DESCALE light makes mineral buildup a reasonable suspect. A sudden complete loss of water immediately after changing grind settings, reseating the reservoir or altering another part of the setup can have a different cause.
If descaling does not restore flow, do not keep repeating acid cycles. Continue with normal water-flow troubleshooting instead.
Can you use cleaning tablets instead of descaler?
No. Ninja cleaning tablets are intended for the CLEAN cycle, not as a substitute for descaling solution.
Coffee-cleaning products and descaling products solve different chemistry problems. Coffee oils need a cleaning procedure, while mineral deposits require descaling.
Use the product required by the maintenance cycle that is actually illuminated on the control panel.
Can you use citric acid or another descaler?
The ES601 documentation gives two straightforward options: Ninja descaling powder or plain white vinegar. Those are the methods with clear manufacturer instructions and exact quantities.
Other espresso-machine descalers may exist, but their concentration and mixing instructions vary. Unless Ninja confirms compatibility or the product explicitly provides appropriate instructions for the machine, there is little reason to improvise when the ES601 already has two documented choices.

Does a water filter mean you never need to descale?

Should you descale early just to be safe?
More descaling is not automatically better maintenance. Descaling is useful when mineral buildup needs to be removed, but there is no benefit in repeatedly running acidic solution through the machine without a reason.
Set the ES601’s water-hardness level correctly, use sensible water and follow the DESCALE reminder. If you notice a gradual scale-related symptom before the light appears, maintenance may be worth considering, but repeated preventative descaling every few weeks is unnecessary.

Then complete the part that is easy to overlook: wash the removable components, refill the reservoir with fresh water, run a 12 oz CLASSIC brew, and PURGE the steam wand. Once the machine is properly rinsed, you can return to brewing without leaving descaler or vinegar in the water path.
