Ninja Luxe Café Pro Americano: ES701 Settings & Guide

To make an Americano on the Ninja Luxe Café Pro ES701, install the basket for the size you want, select AMERICANO, match the grinder to the Barista Assist recommendation, grind, tamp, and press START BREW. The machine handles the espresso extraction and hot-water dilution automatically.

The ES701 can make Single, Double, and Quad Americanos. At the default strength, the approximate finished volumes are 2.3 oz for Single, 4.5 oz for Double, and 10.1 oz for Quad. If you want a larger drink without changing the extraction style, you can add more water afterward with the independent Hot Water function.

How to make an Americano on the Ninja Luxe Café Pro ES701

1. Choose the Americano size

The ES701 uses the installed basket to determine which espresso-based drink sizes are available.

AmericanoBasketApprox. default output
SingleSingle basket2.3 oz
DoubleDouble basket4.5 oz
QuadLuxe basket10.1 oz

For most people making a normal mug-sized Americano, the Double is the easiest starting point. The Quad is substantially larger and uses much more coffee.

2. Install the correct basket

Insert the chosen basket into the portafilter and press it firmly into place.

Place the portafilter level in the grinding cradle. The ES701 detects the basket and makes the compatible brew options available on the control panel.

3. Select AMERICANO

Turn the center dial until AMERICANO is illuminated.

Do this before grinding. The selected drink and basket affect the dose and the grind recommendation used by Barista Assist.

4. Match the recommended grind size

Look at the CURRENT and RECOMMENDED grind numbers on the display.

Turn the physical grinder dial until CURRENT matches RECOMMENDED, then press START GRIND.

The exact grind number can change with the coffee beans and previous extractions. Do not copy a fixed number from another ES701 owner. For more detail, see our Ninja Luxe Café Pro grind size guide.

5. Tamp twice

After grinding, leave the portafilter in the cradle and pull the integrated tamper lever firmly all the way down.

Release it and tamp a second time. Ninja recommends two tamps to help create an even espresso puck.

6. Install the portafilter and brew

  1. Remove the portafilter from the grinding cradle.
  2. Align the orange mark on the portafilter with the orange mark on the group head.
  3. Turn the portafilter firmly to lock it in place.
  4. Place your cup underneath.
  5. Press START BREW.

The machine brews the espresso and adds the programmed hot water automatically. You do not need to brew a separate espresso and manually measure water for a normal ES701 Americano.

Ninja Luxe Café Pro Americano sizes

The US ES701 guide gives the following approximate default outputs:

DrinkCoffee doseApprox. output
Single Americano9 g2.3 oz
Double Americano18 g4.5 oz
Quad Americano40 g10.1 oz

Ninja notes that actual output can vary by approximately 10%, so do not treat these numbers as laboratory measurements.

Changing espresso strength can also change the final output volume.

Which Americano size should you choose?

Single Americano

Choose Single when you want the smallest and least caffeinated version. Its default finished volume is only about 2.3 oz, so it is much smaller than the large Americanos sold by many coffee shops.

Double Americano

The Double Americano is the most practical starting point for everyday use. It uses an 18 g coffee dose and produces approximately 4.5 oz at default strength.

If you want more liquid but are happy with the coffee intensity, add additional hot water after brewing rather than immediately moving to a Quad.

Quad Americano

The Quad uses the Luxe basket, approximately 40 g of coffee, and produces about 10.1 oz at the default setting.

This is not simply a Double with extra water. It also starts with substantially more coffee, so it produces a much larger and more caffeinated drink.

How much water is in a Ninja Americano?

An Americano is different from a Lungo because the espresso is extracted normally and then diluted with hot water.

Ninja describes the default Americano as approximately a 2:1 water-to-espresso ratio when made with the Double basket at the default strength.

The machine handles that programmed dilution automatically, so there is no need to measure two parts water manually each time.

How to make a larger Americano

If the programmed Americano tastes good but you simply want a larger cup, use the ES701’s independent Hot Water function after brewing.

  1. Brew the Americano normally.
  2. Leave room in the cup.
  3. Use HOT WATER to add water gradually.
  4. Stop when the strength and volume suit your taste.

This lets you make a longer drink without changing how the espresso itself was extracted.

Americano vs. Lungo on the ES701

Americano and Lungo both produce a larger drink than espresso, but they get there in different ways.

AmericanoLungo
BaseNormal espresso extractionLonger espresso extraction
Extra waterAdded after espressoPasses through coffee puck
FlavorLess intense, diluted espressoSharper, more extracted
CaffeineSimilar to equivalent espresso basketCan be higher due to longer extraction
Best whenYou want espresso flavor in a larger drinkYou prefer a longer pulled shot

If you want more volume while preserving a normal espresso extraction, choose Americano. If you deliberately want more water to pass through the grounds, choose Lungo.

Americano vs. drip coffee

An Americano is also not the same as the ES701’s Classic or Rich drip coffee.

Americano starts as espresso and is diluted with hot water. Classic and Rich use the Luxe basket and a filter-coffee-style brewing process designed for larger coffee servings.

If you want the body and flavor character of espresso but in a less concentrated drink, use Americano. If you want a conventional mug of brewed coffee, use Classic or Rich instead.

What strength should you use for Americano?

Start with the default strength before adjusting anything.

If the Americano tastes too weak, increase strength one step and test again. If it tastes too concentrated or harsh, try reducing strength.

Remember that changing strength affects the brew ratio and can also change the finished volume, so the cup may not contain exactly the same amount after the adjustment.

What grind size should you use for Americano?

Use the grind size recommended by Barista Assist for the Americano you selected.

Although the finished drink contains more water than espresso, Americano still begins with an espresso extraction. Do not deliberately move to a coarse drip-coffee grind just because the final drink is larger.

Match CURRENT to RECOMMENDED and allow the machine to dial in your beans.

Why does my Americano taste weak or watery?

An Americano is intentionally less concentrated than straight espresso, but it should still taste clearly like coffee.

  • Make sure you selected AMERICANO rather than a drip-coffee program.
  • Check that CURRENT matches the Barista Assist grind recommendation.
  • Use reasonably fresh coffee beans.
  • Tamp twice and make sure the puck is level.
  • Try a higher strength setting if the default is too mild.
  • Do not add extra hot water until you have tasted the programmed drink.

Why does my Americano taste too strong?

If the espresso flavor is stronger than you prefer, first try the programmed drink at a lower strength setting.

You can also add a small amount of extra hot water after brewing. That is often a better solution than changing the grinder solely to make the finished drink weaker.

Why does my Americano taste bitter?

Bitterness usually points back to the espresso extraction or the coffee itself rather than the added water.

  • Follow the Barista Assist grind recommendation.
  • Do not use a stronger setting than you actually need.
  • Keep the basket and group head clean.
  • Try fresher beans or a lighter roast if very dark beans taste harsh.

Why is my Americano smaller or larger than expected?

The official ES701 volumes are approximate rather than guaranteed exact outputs.

Ninja states that espresso-based outputs can vary by around 10%. The strength setting also affects the amount of liquid produced.

A small difference is therefore normal. A dramatically incorrect volume deserves further checking.

Can you add milk to an Americano?

Yes. There is nothing wrong with adding a splash of milk or cream if that is how you prefer the drink.

Milk is not part of a traditional Americano, though. Once milk becomes a major part of the drink, you are moving toward a different espresso-and-milk style rather than a standard Americano.

Can you make an iced Americano on the Ninja Luxe Café Pro?

You can make an iced Americano by combining espresso, cold water and ice, but the ES701 does not need the regular hot Americano program to create the coffee base.

For a colder drink with less immediate ice melt, the machine’s Cold-Pressed espresso function is also worth considering because it brews espresso at a lower temperature. That produces a different preparation from the standard hot Americano program, so choose based on the drink you actually want.

Americano vs. Cold-Pressed espresso

Cold-Pressed is not simply a chilled Americano.

Americano uses espresso plus hot water to create a larger, less intense hot drink. Cold-Pressed uses a lower-temperature espresso extraction intended as a base for cold drinks.

If you want a traditional hot Americano, select AMERICANO. If you are building a cold espresso drink over ice, Cold-Pressed may be the more useful starting point.

Do you need to add hot water manually?

No. For the normal Americano program, the ES701 automatically combines the espresso with its programmed hot-water volume.

The separate Hot Water function is useful only when you want to make the finished Americano larger or customize the dilution beyond the programmed amount.

Common ES701 Americano mistakes

  • Using Classic or Rich when you actually want espresso-based coffee.
  • Selecting a coarse drip-coffee grind instead of following Barista Assist.
  • Assuming Americano and Lungo use the same extraction method.
  • Adding extra water before tasting the programmed Americano.
  • Choosing Quad simply because you want a larger cup without considering the much larger coffee dose.
  • Changing grind, strength and beans all at the same time while troubleshooting taste.

Quick Ninja Luxe Café Pro Americano checklist

  • Choose Single, Double, or Quad.
  • Install the matching basket.
  • Select AMERICANO before grinding.
  • Match CURRENT grind size to RECOMMENDED.
  • Grind the dose.
  • Tamp twice.
  • Lock the portafilter into the group head.
  • Press START BREW.
  • Taste before adding extra hot water.

The simplest way to get a good Ninja Luxe Café Pro Americano is to let the ES701 do what the Americano program was designed to do: use the correct basket, follow Barista Assist for the espresso grind, tamp consistently, and let the machine control the espresso-plus-hot-water brew. Start with a Double at default strength, then adjust strength or add Hot Water only after you know how the standard drink tastes with your beans.
