Cleaning the Ninja Luxe Café Pro ES701 involves more than pressing the CLEAN button. The automatic clean cycle removes coffee oils and grounds from the group head, but the grinder, integrated tamper, portafilter, baskets, steam wand, XL milk jug and drip tray all need their own routine care.
If the CLEAN light is on, the procedure itself takes about 6 minutes and requires the double basket, cleaning disc and one espresso-machine cleaning tablet. This guide also covers the maintenance that the automatic cycle does not perform for you.

What does the CLEAN light mean?
The CLEAN light means the ES701 has reached the point where Ninja recommends running its automatic cleaning cycle.
The cycle backflushes the shower screen and group-head area to remove accumulated coffee oils and grounds. It is not the same as descaling, and it does not clean the grinder or milk system for you.
You can also run a CLEAN cycle before the light appears if brew quality has noticeably changed and normal basket and group-head cleaning have not solved it.
What you need for the ES701 CLEAN cycle
- The ES701 portafilter.
- The Double basket.
- The Ninja cleaning disc.
- One espresso-machine cleaning tablet.
- A filled water reservoir.
- An empty main drip tray.
The cleaning disc and starter tablets are supplied with the ES701. Ninja also sells replacement espresso cleaning tablets under part number XSKCLNTBL8PK.
How to run the Ninja Luxe Café Pro CLEAN cycle
- Empty the main drip tray completely. Water and residue from the cleaning cycle are deposited into the tray, so starting with a full tray can cause an overflow.
- Fill the water reservoir up to, but not above, the Max Fill line.
- Insert the Double basket into the portafilter.
- Place the cleaning disc on top of the Double basket with its handle facing upward.
- Place one cleaning tablet in the center of the cleaning disc.
- Lock the portafilter into the group head.
- Press CLEAN and follow the control-panel prompt to start the cycle.
- Allow the approximately 6-minute cycle to finish. Do not remove the portafilter during the process.
- Wait for the completion beep.
- Carefully remove the portafilter and main drip tray. Both may contain hot water.
- Wash the used components with warm soapy water and rinse them thoroughly.
Why you must empty the drip tray first
During the CLEAN cycle, the ES701 backflushes water and coffee residue into the main drip tray rather than sending everything into a cup under the portafilter.
This surprises some owners because the tray can receive substantially more water during maintenance than it does during a normal espresso. Empty it before pressing CLEAN even if it does not look completely full.
Which basket do you use for cleaning?
Use the Double basket for the automatic CLEAN cycle.
The ES701 also includes Single and Luxe baskets, but the official cleaning procedure specifies the Double basket with the cleaning disc placed on top of it.
Where does the cleaning tablet go?
The tablet goes in the center of the cleaning disc, not loose in the water reservoir and not directly inside an empty basket.
The correct order is:
- Double basket inside portafilter.
- Cleaning disc on top of the basket.
- One cleaning tablet in the center of the disc.
Can you run CLEAN without a cleaning tablet?
If you are trying to perform the actual maintenance cycle requested by the CLEAN light, use the cleaning disc and a suitable espresso-machine cleaning tablet as specified by Ninja.
A water-only rinse is not the same procedure because it does not provide the cleaning agent intended to break down accumulated coffee oils.
CLEAN is not the same as DESCALE
The two buttons solve different problems:

Do not put descaling powder or vinegar into a CLEAN cycle, and do not use a cleaning tablet as a substitute for descaling solution.
Clean the portafilter and baskets after brewing
The automatic CLEAN cycle is not a reason to leave coffee grounds sitting in the portafilter between drinks.
- Remove the portafilter after brewing.
- Knock out the used coffee puck.
- Remove the basket.
- Rinse away loose grounds.
- Wash with warm soapy water when residue remains.
- Rinse thoroughly and allow the parts to dry before storage.
Pay particular attention to the small holes in the baskets. Coffee residue blocking them can alter flow and make an extraction look like a grinder or pump problem.
How to clean the ES701 group head
Loose coffee can collect around the shower screen and the sealing surface where the portafilter locks into the machine.
- Let the group-head area cool before touching it.
- Remove loose grounds from the visible area.
- Keep the portafilter rim and group-head sealing surface free of coffee.
- Run the CLEAN cycle when requested to flush residue that normal wiping cannot reach.
Grounds trapped around the sealing surface can contribute to coffee leaking around the edge of the portafilter.
How to clean the integrated tamper
The integrated tamper is one of the main cleaning differences between the ES701 Pro and the ES601 Premier. Fine coffee grounds can accumulate on and around the tamper face over time.
- Make sure the machine is not actively grinding or brewing.
- Remove the grinder chute cover located above the grinding cradle.
- Use the supplied cleaning brush to remove coffee grounds from the tamper face and surrounding area.
- Replace the grinder chute cover when finished.
Do not soak or flood the integrated tamper area with water. It is part of the machine, not a removable accessory.
How to clean the ES701 grinder
The conical burr grinder should be cleaned dry. Coffee dust and oils can accumulate more quickly when you use dark, oily or flavored beans.

- Turn the machine off and unplug it.
- Remove the remaining beans from the hopper.
- Unlock and remove the hopper.
- Rotate the removable upper burr until its alignment marks match the machine and lift it out.
- Clean the removed burr with the supplied dry cleaning brush.
- Brush the fixed burr inside the machine.
- Remove grounds from the grinding cradle and grinder chute.
- Reinstall the upper burr correctly.
- Reinstall and lock the hopper.
Do not put water on the burrs or pour water into the grinder. Moisture mixed with fine coffee grounds can create a paste inside a mechanism that is designed to operate dry.
How to clean the bean hopper
If coffee oils or dust have built up inside the hopper, remove it from the machine before cleaning it.
Never pour water into the hopper while it is attached to the ES701. Any liquid that reaches the grinder below can damage or clog the grinding system.
Make sure a washed hopper is completely dry before reinstalling it and adding beans.
Clean the steam wand after every milk drink
Milk residue becomes much harder to remove once it dries onto or inside the steam wand.
- Remove the milk jug after frothing.
- Immediately wipe the outside of the steam wand with a clean damp cloth.
- Return the wand to its lowered position.
- Allow the ES701 to auto-purge the wand.
- If auto-purge cannot run and the PURGE button illuminates, run PURGE manually before the next milk drink.

Deep-clean the steam wand when necessary
The supplied ES701 cleaning brush also contains the tools needed for a deeper steam-wand clean.
- Let the steam wand cool.
- Remove the cap from the cleaning brush to access its cleaning needle.
- Use the needle to clear dried material from the steam-wand tip.
- If necessary, use the wrench built into the brush to remove the steam-wand tip.
- Clear residue from the removable tip and steam opening.
- Reinstall the tip securely.
- Run PURGE to flush out remaining loosened material.
Do not enlarge the steam holes with improvised needles, drill bits or other tools. Use the supplied cleaning tool to remove residue without changing the steam-tip opening.
Clean the XL milk jug and whisk
Do not leave milk sitting in the XL jug after a drink. Milk residue affects both hygiene and future foam quality.
- Discard unused milk that should not be returned to its original container.
- Remove milk residue from the jug.
- Clean the frothing whisk thoroughly.
- Rinse away all soap before the next drink.
A clean steam wand combined with a dirty jug or whisk can still produce poor foam, so treat the entire milk system as one maintenance area.
How to clean the drip trays
The ES701 routes normal rinse, bypass and purge water into its drip-tray system, so water in the tray does not automatically mean the machine is leaking.
- Remove the tray before it reaches its overflow point.
- Empty any standing water.
- Remove coffee grounds and milk splashes.
- Wash and rinse the removable components.
- Dry the surrounding machine area before reinstalling them.
Always start the automatic CLEAN cycle with the main drip tray empty, regardless of when you last emptied it.
How to clean the exterior
Turn the machine off before cleaning the exterior.
- Use a soft damp cloth on the stainless-steel and plastic surfaces.
- Wipe coffee and milk splashes before they dry.
- Keep water away from buttons, electrical openings and the grinder.
- Do not immerse the main ES701 unit.
The CLEAN light is still on after the cycle
If the CLEAN light remains on, first make sure you completed the actual automatic cycle rather than only rinsing the portafilter.
- Use the Double basket.
- Use the cleaning disc.
- Use one cleaning tablet.
- Start the programmed CLEAN cycle from the control panel.
- Allow the entire approximately 6-minute program to finish.
If the complete cycle finishes normally but the machine immediately continues requesting CLEAN, power it down normally and restart it once. If the notification continues after a correctly completed cycle, contact Ninja rather than repeatedly consuming tablets.
The CLEAN cycle will not start
- Make sure the reservoir contains enough water.
- Remove and firmly reseat the reservoir.
- Confirm the portafilter is correctly locked into the group head.
- Make sure the machine is not currently performing another brew or maintenance operation.
- Follow the CLEAN prompt and center-dial confirmation shown by the control panel.

Can you use vinegar for the CLEAN cycle?
No. White vinegar is associated with the machine’s separate descaling procedure, not the six-minute coffee-oil CLEAN cycle.
For CLEAN, use the cleaning disc and an appropriate espresso cleaning tablet. Do not pour vinegar into the reservoir simply because the CLEAN light is illuminated.
Can you use the cleaning tablet to descale?
No. A cleaning tablet targets coffee oils and brewing residue. Descaling solution targets mineral buildup inside the water system.
If both CLEAN and DESCALE maintenance are due, treat them as separate procedures rather than combining the chemicals into one cycle.

What the automatic CLEAN cycle does not clean
The six-minute program is useful, but it is not a whole-machine self-cleaning system.
It does not remove old beans from the hopper, brush coffee from the burrs, clean the integrated tamper face, wash the portafilter and baskets, remove dried milk from the jug or physically clear a blocked steam tip.
That distinction is the key to maintaining the Ninja Luxe Café Pro correctly: use CLEAN for the internal brew path, but continue cleaning every user-accessible coffee and milk component as part of normal ownership.
ES701 cleaning checklist
- Portafilter emptied and clean.
- Single, Double and Luxe baskets free of blocked holes.
- Group-head rim free of loose coffee.
- Steam wand wiped and purged after milk.
- XL jug and whisk free of milk residue.
- Drip tray emptied regularly.
- Grinder and burrs cleaned only with a dry brush.
- Integrated tamper face free of accumulated grounds.
- CLEAN cycle run with Double basket, disc and one tablet when requested.
- DESCALE treated as a separate maintenance procedure.
Keeping those areas separate makes troubleshooting much easier.
